Conway's Game of Life is a 2D cellular automaton. Every step, whether a cell survives, dies, or is born depends on the number of horizontally, vertically, and diagonally adjaecent living cells. For living cells, if there are two or three adjaecent cells, the cell stays alive, otherwise the cell dies. For dead cells, if there are exactly three adjaecent cells, the cell becomes alive, otherwise the cell stays dead. Despite these simple rules, Conway's Game of Life can display complex emergent behavior as shown above.
